[Mental health care is naturally an issue of political significance. A frequently quoted figure suggests that one in four of us are likely to experience significant mental health difficulties at some point in our lives. There are reasons to question this figure since statistics like these often rely on diagnoses — counting the number of people who meet the criteria for a mental health diagnosis. It follows that, if we are sceptical of diagnoses, we should be sceptical of these figures. But what is clear is that the numbers of us affected are huge. According to the World Health Organization, poor mental health is the single greatest cause of disability worldwide,1 and in England alone, the costs of poor mental health are estimated at £105 billion per year.2 So it is right and proper that politicians take an interest in these matters.]
