[This chapter, as an introductory chapter of this book, provides the book scope and backgrounds including why this book focuses on a resilience approach for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and how the approach is interrelated with systemic challenges in and around SDGs across natural-human-social systems (living systems). Especially, this chapter highlights the underlying theme of this book, i.e., the transformation for systemic challenges, which is the major concerns of SDGs at local through global scales. Thus, the chapter articulates the structure of systemic challenges, such as complex cause-effect structures from macro to microlevels, multiple interacting components, multidimensional and cascading impacts and “deep uncertainty,” and discusses how the natures of systemic challenges are relevant to a resilience approach. With this backbone, this chapter introduces different chapters in this book.]
