Abstract

[Burnett uses Anne Waldman as a case study that exemplifies, through institutional practice and the aesthetics of performance, spoken word and small press publishing, the relational returns and alliances involved in much innovative poetic practice. Waldman’s community building and activism at Naropa University, Colorado, are explored (with reference also to the Poetry Project at St. Mark’s, New York), supported by primary research including interviews with Waldman. Founded in 1974 by Tibetan Buddhist lama Chogyam Trungpa, Naropa promotes contemplative, non-competitive education, blending Western traditions of practice and scholarship with Buddhism and other traditions. Waldman’s founding of the Jack Kerouac School for Disembodied Poetics at Naropa with Ginsberg, represents a poetry community not motivated by financial gain, standard Western educational pedagogy, or academic careerism.]
