[Johnny Cuthbert took part in ten British title fights in the 1920s and 1930s, earning a Lonsdale Belt outright—the first Sheffield boxer to do so. This was a time when boxers fought hard and often, a circumstance that enabled them to build up rivalries that might last years. One such was with Harry Corbett, who Cuthbert fought eight times. Cuthbert was the first Sheffield boxer of whom moving pictures survive; his all-action style endeared him to audiences in Britain, France and the USA. Cuthbert’s career spanned the General Strike and the Great Depression, which saw some Sheffielders reduced to scavenging for coal. The successes of their little fellow citizen were some respite from their daily hardships.
