[The 1890s saw the emergence of George Corfield, the first boxer of national repute Sheffield had ever produced. Something of a local hero, Corfield was unchallenged at local level but continued to fall short when he took on the best in the country. He was however largely responsible for Sheffield becoming during this time the centre of British boxing, where attendances were highest and purses largest, especially at the Norfolk Drill Hall. At the same time Corfield and others like him were repeatedly the object of the ire of Sheffield’s anti-boxing and anti-alcohol Methodism-influenced authorities who denied him a public house licence and forced him to close down his boxing school.]
