[This chapter gives critical consideration to some of the main sociological approaches to, and theories of, stigma. Goffman’s work is appraised in some detail and its limitations exposed. This is followed by discussions of other insider/outsider analyses, encompassing the figurational studies of Elias. Themes of the relationships between insiders or the established and outsiders or strangers are explored. Finally, the chapter introduces two types of social theory that inform this investigation, namely critical theory and critical realism.]
