[This chapter briefly surveys the notion of the common from various perspectives and specifically discusses at length the Roman Catholic Church’s teaching on the common good as reflected in the documents of Catholic social teaching (CST), a set of documents that applies the Christian faith to social issues. It also explains the philosophical, theological, and sociological perspectives on the common good. Using sociological perspectives and units of analysis in research to distinguish the various types of communities, it argues that attaining the common good in any form or level of community demands solidarity and subsidiarity that respect the unity of the community and its various levels of authority. It also attempts to illustrate CST’s social doctrines on the common good, solidarity, and subsidiarity in a more empirical way by using sociological concepts and analysis.
