[The methods chapter outlines the processes used for the study that sits at the core of this book, providing data on the sociology of education for most chapters and continually revisited throughout the book. It reports on how across 10 days in September of 2018 the ‘Voices of Experience: Secondary School Experiences Survey’ study was launched. The study was aimed at generating data which would help foster understanding of Australians’ social experiences around current and past schooling contexts and meet research gaps on social issues in teacher training with a view to informing teacher education on sociology of education. The project’s conceptualisation relied heavily from the outset on the insights and energies of people in a variety of roles around education contexts and the lack of comparability of much data on separate social issues. An anonymous survey was designed to gather basic data, combining both quantitative and qualitative questions to enable people with diverse schooling experiences to share their stories and ideas. Participants were recruited mostly online through paid Facebook advertising and promotion by participants of the advertisement on their Facebook posts, e-lists and Instagram pages. Tutorial questions for this chapter consider what social topics readers are most interested in around schools, how they might study them and how the choices behind the study featured in this book (such as its focus on students’ perspectives only) might create a view with particular gaps for readers to overcome by exploring other sources.]
