A Student’s Guide to the MA TESOL: Situating Ourselves [Who are we? What exactly does this field encompass? The truth is that while any TESOL program will be devoted to helping you learn the theory and pedagogy of English language education, they can reflect a wide variety of perspectives, thus it is important to begin by situating ourselves. We will look at our location from a broad perspective when I offer an abbreviated history of TESOL as a way of understanding its interdisciplinary roots and current location. You will also have an opportunity to consider where your own MA program is situated within the university structure and how this might affect your education. TESOL programs housed in departments of English, Education, and Applied Linguistics can differ widely in the courses they offer and the perspectives they privilege. We will close by situating ourselves with respect to terminology, and discuss the ways that it can vary within the field. Let’s begin, however, at the micro level, by examining who we are as individuals within a group of professionals, and by thinking about your own reasons for obtaining this degree and about the different kinds of people you might meet in your program.] http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png

Abstract

[Who are we? What exactly does this field encompass? The truth is that while any TESOL program will be devoted to helping you learn the theory and pedagogy of English language education, they can reflect a wide variety of perspectives, thus it is important to begin by situating ourselves. Let’s begin, however, at the micro level, by examining who we are as individuals within a group of professionals, and by thinking about your own reasons for obtaining this degree and about the different kinds of people you might meet in your program.]
