Abstract

[When I left East Timor, I was not happy. I was proud of myself because I did my best to fulfill my responsibilities and because I cared. I was indeed immature, poorly qualified, and inexperienced, but deep inside me, I knew that to do my work, I had to see it through their eyes. After a few weeks of being there, once the anxiety of the moment and the overwhelming feeling of the adventure were over, I could finally see the complete picture. Until then, I was just another ex-pat, another white boy, more concerned about being liked and having a good time. And so, I spent most of my days meeting new people, laughing with them, and going out for a few beers.]
