[Taliaferro (2001) did realism a great service by advancing a fairly sound framework for categorizing realism theories (see also Liu and Zhang 2006). However, because his understanding of the levels of analysis was incomplete and imprecise and, more importantly, because his understanding of the differences between offensive realism and defensive realism suffers from several critical misunderstandings (chapters 1, 2), his categorization is sometimes misleading if not outright wrong.1 Building upon the discussions in previous chapters, this chapter advances a sounder categorization of realism theories.2 Since it will be impossible to give all realism theories their due, at the risk of oversimplification and ruffling some feathers, I shall focus on theories that have not been rigorously or correctly categorized.]
