Abstract

[This Chapter explains how the animal movement formed, organised, and mobilised. Several forces underpinned the creation of the modern movement: traditional animal welfare societies, the environment movement, and the political system. These networks also cultivated the formation of the national lobby group, the Australian Federation of Animal Societies. An entrepreneurial and collaborative environment enabled the young organisation to grow and ensured its survival through financial hardship. Chapter 2 and this chapter present the origins and creation of the movement and set the scene for a discussion about how the movement challenged the culture and politics of animal use and exploitation from the 1980s onwards.]
