A West African Model to Address Human Trafficking: Delimiting the Problem of Trafficking in Persons [West Africa is also known as the “Bulge of Africa” and comprises the countries of Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo. There are many different tribes in Western Africa spanning a diversity of cultures. More than a thousand local languages are spoken including cross-border native tongues such as Ewe, Fulfulde, Hausa, Mandingo, Wolof, Yoruba, Ibo, and Ga. Comprising approximately 5% of the world’s population (over 300 million people) in a vast territory covering over 40% of sub-Saharan Africa (about 5.1 million square kilometers), West Africa is the most densely populated on the continent.
