This characteristically labels the region as experienc- ing a youth bulge; a demographic concept where young people proportionately com- prise a large segment of the population. A youth bulge is often viewed negatively, a situation where young people are referred to as a ‘ticking time-bomb’. It is there- fore unsurprising that such a view, accompanied by high youth unemployment and crime, attracts academic curiosity and the attention of policy experts. Aidan Craney, author of the book Youth in Fiji and Solomon Islands, reminds us of this reality and the temptation to jump in and ‘save and solve’.
