[Geotourism is a form of niche tourism focusing on the visitation of geological and geomorphological sites in rural areas and aiming at educating visitors about the Earth’s heritage. Turkey has a very rich geodiversity due to its geological and geographic heritage. The complex geology of Turkey is a product of the collision between two continents, Gondwanaland in the south and Eurasia in the north. The result of this collision provides a unique natural laboratory to study the geology of the country. Two mountain ranges, the Northern Anatolian Mountains and the Taurus Mountains, are located in the northern and southern parts of Anatolia and reflect the tectonic and stratigraphic features of Turkey. Besides these, fault-block mountains with uplifted blocks along the normal faults are found in the western part of Anatolia as well as volcanic mountains in various parts of the country. Due to this very complex geological history, Turkey is gifted with outstanding resources for the development of geotourism. The purpose of this chapter is to document the main geotourism resources and evaluate the potential for the development of geotourism in Turkey. The chapter closes with a discussion of the measures that should be taken in order to advance the promotion of Turkey’s geosites and geoparks to domestic and international visitors.]
