[The project is the most important component of any senior capstone design course. Many design courses provide students with a list of projects to choose from at the beginning of the semester. Students choose projects or are assigned to them and teams are formed. Some of the projects are sponsored (and defined) by companies or faculty, and others may be designed around the needs of a particular patient or group of patients with a similar disability or disease. Providing students with a list of predefined projects allows instructors to prescreen projects to ensure that they are appropriate for the course. It eliminates the need for students to spend time researching and identifying problems to solve, allowing them to begin projects at the start of the semester. In some design programs, this is necessary to provide adequate time for students to be able to complete all phases of the design process, including building and testing prototypes.]
