It has been argued that the Catholic Church engaged in a major project from the beginning of the nineteenth century aimed at reestablishing its power and authority among the faithful, raising the status of Catholics socially so that the Church’s own position in society would be elevated, and Christianizing people in the Catholic faith by setting up missions wherever the colonial powers established themselves. The provision of education was a major part of this project, and the teaching religious constituted the main teaching force in the schools that were established. Furthermore, alongside nuns and priests, brothers played a large part in the overall work of the teaching religious across the countries of the English-speaking world. A broad overview of the origins and spread of the main teaching orders of brothers operating in a variety of these countries, in missionary territories, and among emigrant communities, has also been provided.]
