[The United States established its government system based in federalism, where power and decision-making is shared between the federal government and the individual governments of the fifty states. To this end, oversight of public higher education is reserved as primarily a state-level matter. Consequently, when considering higher education governance and governance reform in the U.S., state-level efforts for change reflect the politics of a specific state at that specific time. The chapter is concluded with a discussion of lessons learned from the current literature and areas for future research.]
