[The introduction sets the scene of the book. It begins by letting the reader glimpse the early stages of France’s most recent military interventions in Africa, Operation Serval in Mali and Operation Sangaris in the Central African Republic, detailing the moments of deployment and replicating the feelings of suspense and surprise that an attentive spectator could experience from January to December 2013. From there, the introduction moves on to explain both the purpose and objectives of the study. By referring to the largely outcome-biased literature on French military activism, the author lays out the reasons for conducting a process-oriented and ideational analysis. Short outlines of the subsequent chapters conclude the introduction.]
