[At several points in the previous chapters, we have alluded to projects that included a role for the applications to provide more information to assist the system in making power management decisions. Users may also want to respond with alternative behavior when energy supplies are low. In this chapter, we focus on techniques for application-level involvement. We first look at simple hints that the applications can provide about their usage patterns. Then we discuss actions that the applications can take to adapt their resource demand. Finally, we consider some challenges for application development and algorithm design specifically aimed at greater energy efficiency. The shaded portions of Fig. 6.1 show the new features covered in this chapter and provide context for the discussion.]
