[Genres and institutional norms in both the discourse arts and in journalism contribute to the shape of controversy. The philosophical dialogue genre is a cultural prototype for decision making dialogues, a genre that is linked to the dialogue model, a normative framework that has contributed solutions to the location problem in argumentation research. The news article genre is a prototype for news writing, a genre whose particular textual features have developed in parallel with the objectivity norm in professional journalism. Though the philosophical dialogue genre is a cultural prototype for decision making dialogue, the history of the news article genre and the professional norms of journalism are relevant to the study of controversy because news texts serve as a location of public controversy for many readers. Understanding the prototypical genre and central norms of the profession helps to explain how news shapes public controversy.]
