[Many families planning for the future of their business do not give a lot of conscious thought to family values or a vision for the future. In some cases, family members downplay the importance of developing statements that reflect the family’s wishes and beliefs. Similarly, ownership continuity planning is often not given the focus it deserves. The end result—as well as the process of ownership continuity planning—is also often perceived as obvious, in that family members think ownership transitions are fairly straightforward.
