[This chapter explores displacement experiences in gentrifying areas of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the Western Addition, of San Francisco, California and aims to connect individual stories of displacement at the neighborhood level to the broader historical trajectories of urban development. In addition to residential displacement, changes in the commercial environment of the gentrifying neighborhoods are also considered. While the two cities are quite different, they have interesting similarities. Both are global cities both are port cities which grew as a result of an historical gold rush; both suffered from turn-of-the twentieth-century plagues which impacted urban development; and both have seen significant twenty-first-century economic growth with concomitant gentrification. More importantly, the two share a vision of their city which displaces poor, non-white populations to the geographic perimeter of the urban landscape, far from resources and opportunities to improve their lives.]
