Gentrification around the World, Volume IIntroduction

Gentrification around the World, Volume I: Introduction [The first chapter of Gentrification around the World: Gentrifiers and the Displaced serves as an introduction to the volume. It addresses the broad question of in what ways does gentrification affect cities, neighborhoods, and the everyday experiences of ordinary people. Central to this work are issues of social justice. We ask, what is the harm in gentrifying a neighborhood? The usual consequence is the displacement of residents and the businesses of less economic means relative to new residents. People can no longer afford to stay, and “mom and pop businesses are replaced by retail chains and upscale boutiques catering to the newer residents. Ultimately, we question, “Who has a right to the city?” These guiding principles of social justice have informed our selections for this volume. The chapter continues with a description of each contribution to the volume.] http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png
