Moroccan Monarchy and the Islamist Challenge: Maintaining Makhzen Power
[Morocco has gone from sultanate to colonial protectorate to modern state while managing to retain the fundamental elements of its system of religious governance. This chapter argues that Moroccan religious policy today has developed from the institutionalization of traditional Islamic structures during the French protectorate. This legacy not only preserved the legitimacy of the king as the principal religious actor of the Moroccan religious field but equipped the state with a modern religious administration in the form of the Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs. As a result, the Makhzen has been able to adapt to changing political circumstances by making use of its religious authority and “official Islam” as tools to co-opt potential challengers to the regime.]
