[It is Dietrich Bonhoeffer who in so many ways illustrates and helps us understand the power and meaning of a kairos consciousness—the consciousness that helps us to discern and act upon a kairos moment. I had always thought that such a kairos consciousness in Bonhoeffer became clearest when he made those momentous decisions that have so marked his theology and his life. The decision about grabbing the spokes of the wheel, in the famous essay on the “Jewish Question” for example; or his decision that commitment to social justice and peace is at heart a commitment about and to Christ himself, as he writes to his brother.1]
