Kenyan Youth Education in Colonial and Post-Colonial Times: Called to Educate: Kariokor and... [This chapter describes in detail the general functions of youth clubs and the early roles they played in laying the foundation for Kenya’s primary and secondary education in the colonial period. This role is significant when we examine the work of Kariokor Youth Club, Starehe Youth Club, and Starehe Boys Centre and School (SBC) during this period and Joseph Gikubu’s leading educational work in these clubs. The chapter demonstrates that Gikubu’s full involvement in Kenyan youth education is epitomized in the formation of Kariokor and Starehe youth clubs. In order to understand this involvement, the chapter argues that it is imperative to examine the aims, objectives, and activities of youth clubs. Further, the chapter discusses the minimal educational opportunities that existed for Africans in the colonial period and the role that youth clubs played in addressing this situation.
