[This chapter discusses the vital importance of biographies in educational research, the methods that were used to collect the data for the book, and the educational biographical format that it takes. Additionally, it examines Joseph Gikubu’s early life and schooling, and the circumstances that led to his involvement in Kenyan youth education. It details the minimal education that was offered to African youth during the colonial period, a situation that led to increased levels of youth vagrancy and was exacerbated further when the Mau Mau War broke out. It discusses various colonial experiments such as detention camps, rehabilitation programs, and youth clubs that were undertaken to alleviate the situation and the lack of colonial programs for youth education and vagrancy during this period. The chapter argues that, in order to understand Gikubu’s role in Kenyan youth education, it is important to examine his activities in some of the detention facilities, especially Manyani and Wamumu.] http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png
