Framing and policy change after shooting rampages: a comparative analysis of discourse networksJournal of European Public Policy, 20
[Examines a case of moral panic focused on the illegal acquisition of guns by criminal groups. This case also fits a typical model: a trigger event involving a 23-hour long standoff between police and a lone gunman, dramatic media accounts of unfolding events, an array of sentiments and analyses from politicians, editors, blogging communities and gun lobbyists, and the establishment of an urgent governmental inquiry. The inductive analysis shows that like killer kids, it also followed a unique course, however. The focus on illegal guns and criminal groups is argued to be related to a long-standing concern about gangs in New Zealand, coupled with the value of farming and hunting to the New Zealand economy.]
