[Because this book argues that seemingly intangible forces led to the development of technologies and that individual inventors were merely responding to the demands of a time period, I use several passive voice constructions to convey agent-less action. For instance, “the rhetoric of the wireless was mediated by the time period’s ideology” is a passive voice construction, but, in the context of a socially constructed artifact, the wireless and other technologies come to be because they fulfill a demand in society. Marconi and other supporters have some agency in creating a viable technology, but the technology first had to adhere to social needs. Therefore, it would be difficult and misleading to have active voice constructions for all statements about how the cultures of early twentieth century industrial nations mediated the rhetoric of the wireless.]
