Abstract

[The present chapter deals with the presentation and analysis of how mathematics and logic were portrayed in universal encyclopedias published in Poland in the 1920s. The way that these subjects were presented in encyclopedias written for a sophisticated but rather wide audience provides an original and “inside” view into the intensive local development of mathematics and logic. The entries show that mathematics and logic were both presented in a competent and modern way, and that the current state of research was taken into account. Moreover, new domains in mathematics and logic, such as set theory, topology, and mathematical logic, as well as reflections on the foundations of mathematics, were also addressed. The way in which Polish contributors to the domain were presented provides much information about how leading Polish mathematicians wished the local mathematical scene to be perceived.]
