Own It!Becoming a Learning Family

Own It!: Becoming a Learning Family [While individual ownership development is important, it’s critical to work on the family’s evolution as a team of learning owners, with collective capacity, knowledge, and commitment. This is important because owners need to make high-stakes decisions and resolve conflicts together, often working through divergent goals and perspectives to promote continuity. To do this they need a common vocabulary and collective sense of trust and connection. In this context, a “learning family” takes a deliberate, proactive approach to growth, using feedback, practical steps, and other approaches to build trust and respect, strengthen communication, and advance collaboration and decision-making capacity. Domains of learning here include family enterprise strategy, ownership, governance, philanthropy, and others. Steps to evolve as a learning family include conducting a learning needs assessment; holding in-house (or multi-family) learning sessions; going on learning expeditions; promoting ownership, business, financial, and philanthropic literacy; and even launching a family book club. Don’t forget to have fun. Communication is the cornerstone and starting point, and it’s important to adopt a development plan to individual needs. Be careful not to take on too much too soon, or to prioritize the issues of the few over the needs of the many.] http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png

Abstract

[While individual ownership development is important, it’s critical to work on the family’s evolution as a team of learning owners, with collective capacity, knowledge, and commitment. Be careful not to take on too much too soon, or to prioritize the issues of the few over the needs of the many.]
