Abstract

[In societies that have experienced situations of massive conflict or state repression, more attention is usually paid to victims and perpetrators, neglecting a social sector that tries to remain on the sidelines and behaves indifferently. This chapter explains why it is important for modern democracies to better understand the indifferent sectors of the population and what are the most relevant contributions of this study. It also specifies why Chilean society in the transition to democracy has been chosen as a case study and contextualises the reader with the necessary information to approach the social phenomenon of indifference to the human rights violations committed during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. The different social research methods selected and applied in this research are briefly explained at the end of the chapter.]
