[This chapter describes how a housing investor used data and financial innovation to bring retirement communities to the middle class, then evangelized that concept to the industry by modeling excellence. His company was mission-based: to make the best retirement communities available to middle-income America. Erickson’s theory was that at 75, many would be quite receptive to a new lifestyle at a mega-retirement community that addressed the burdens of housing upkeep and health issues and featured the appeal of vibrant social living. He notes the value and satisfaction he derived from serving older adults, and states that he believes that leaders in senior living must care a lot about them, too. Erickson believes that leaders are born, not made, and that leadership is more of an innate characteristic and talent than a developed quality.
