[This chapter describes how disruptive leaders think and act, as Thomas explains how he conceived several ideas that have and will lead to greater independence for older adults. One of the early practitioners of geriatrics, Thomas fell in love with the field of aging because of the people he served. He also observed that the field was handicapped by a lack of leadership, which was both a systemic problem and a great opportunity. Thomas conceived the Eden Alternative Model to change the culture of nursing homes by eliminating loneliness, helplessness, and boredom. He created The Changing Aging Tour to educate people–through musical theatre–about living with dementia. His new venture, Minka, develops seniors housing that promotes the independence of its residents. Thomas urges the leaders of today and tomorrow to cast aside the leadership of yesterday.]
