[This chapter charts the path of an “original,” who came up through the industry from the front lines. After a first job at a nursing home as its activity director, Matros joined the largest provider of long-term care at the time, a company that required staff to “fit the mold” and that did not suit his personality, as he wore earrings and had long hair. Despite his persona, Matros was serially promoted because he was very good at his job. He did not fit in with the other executives, making his work dreadful. Matros emphasizes how important it is to find a work culture that suits your personality and says he promised myself that if ever in a leadership position where he could impact culture, he would be the most anti-corporate corporate boss around. Matros has run senior living and care companies and now is CEO of a REIT that invests in them.]
