[This chapter describes why and how Shook led the creation of the memory care niche within senior living. Having climbed the ranks to be president and COO of a company that specialized in psychiatric hospital administration, Shook left after observing that typical dementia facilities were dismal. “I would never let my mother live in one of these places,” he thought. By developing a purpose-built concept based on achieving great quality of life, Shook believed that his new company could far exceed the appallingly low standards that the industry was setting for itself. He attributes much of Silverado’s success to its “Love is greater than fear” core operating philosophy, explaining that the positive energy generated by love allows them to offer their residents, client families, and associates the most life has to offer. He says acting from love serves to build and support the divine human spirit in us all.]
