Pervasive Displays: Applications CHAPTER 3 3.1 INTRODUCTION In this chapter we focus on the applications of pervasive displays, both current and future. As we shall see, while existing applications are focused largely on replacing traditional analog signs, it is likely that future applications will provide entirely new functionality that does not have direct counterparts in analog signage. 3.2 CURRENT APPLICATIONS Excluding research prototypes, most widely deployed pervasive display systems are used for one of four different applications: advertising, information presentation, signage or entertainment. 3.2.1 ADVERTISING Advertising is a major application domain for all forms of public display and digital signage. It forms part of the general class of advertising called out-of-home advertising . According to the Outdoor Advertising Association of America, out-of-home advertising generated annual rev- enues of $6.388 billion in 2011 [146]. Large networks of screens owned by advertising brokers such as Stroer ¨ (http://www.stroeer.com) and ClearChannel (http://www.clearchanneloutdoor.com/ products/digital/don/) sell advertising space on signage networks to a wide range of customers. Advertisements form a crucial part of most display networks as they are the principal means by which such networks are funded.
