Pervasive Displays: Case Studies CHAPTER 8 8.1 THE ROLE OF CASE STUDIES As we saw in the last chapter, research into pervasive display systems is often conducted through the creation of prototypes that are deployed “in the wild.” This provides a chance for researchers to study how users interact with such systems outside of the confines of the laboratory and provides insights into performance under realistic situations. Longitudinal studies are particularly interesting as they help mitigate against novelty effects when conducting user experiments. In this chapter we present case studies of two research prototypes that the authors have contributed to, i.e., e-Campus and Digifieds, to help illustrate the type of work being undertaken in the field. 8.2 E-CAMPUS 8.2.1 INTRODUCTION The e-Campus project is a long-running project at Lancaster University [182]. Begun in 2004, the project was the result of a large (£0.5m) investment intended to encourage the development of a public display research testbed on the university campus. From the outset, e-Campus was required to serve as a “laboratory” for other researchers and to be able to accommodate a range of novel applications and content types as well as meeting the needs of traditional digital signage users.
