CHAPTER 9 9.1 RECAP In this lecture we have endeavored to provide a comprehensive introduction to the field of pervasive displays. In Chapter 1 we outlined the basic characteristics of display networks that make them such an interesting topic of study. To provide a sense of the rich history of the subject, in Chapter 2 we presented a chronological view of pervasive display research. In Chapter 3 we considered what the near future might hold for display networks—describing a series of compelling applications that are being postulated for future display networks. Taken together, chapters Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 illustrated how pervasive displays are evolving from simple presentation devices to sophisticated interactive terminals providing access to highly personalized services. Creating pervasive display systems raises a wide range of challenges and requires designers to make a series of important trade-offs, and we dedicated four chapters to key aspects of pervasive display design: audience engagement, display interaction, system software and system evaluation. In Chapter 4 we described current models that attempt to allow designers to understand how viewers and passersby might engage with displays. Once a user has become engaged, most future systems will need to support interaction with the display.
