Pervasive DisplaysThe History of Pervasive Displays

Pervasive Displays: The History of Pervasive Displays CHAPTER 2 2.1 OVERVIEW Pervasive displays and digital signage have a rich research heritage dating back over 30 years. During the course of this lecture we will describe many systems when we discuss specific aspects of pervasive displays, such as interaction or systems software. However, if we were to only present systems in this fashion, we run the risk of not conveying an overall view of how the field has developed over the long term. As a result, in this chapter we focus on providing a high-level summary of pervasive display research in roughly chronological order, clustering systems according to the major research themes of the time, i.e.,: 1. 1980s–1990s: Displays as Media Links 2. Mid- to late-1990s: Ambient and Wearable Displays 3. Early 2000s: Supporting the Workplace 4. Early to mid-2000s: Promoting Social Interaction and Community 5. Late 2000s: Long-Lived Deployments Of course not all research on a specific topic fits into the relevant time frame so, where appropriate, we also provide pointers to follow-up work. We hope that this chapter provides the reader with a simple way of gaining a broad appreciation of the research that as been conducted in the field of pervasive displays. 2.2 1980s–1990s: http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png

Abstract

CHAPTER 2 2.1 OVERVIEW Pervasive displays and digital signage have a rich research heritage dating back over 30 years. 2.2 1980s–1990s:
