CHAP TE R 1 Basics of Quality of Ser vice in Wireless Networks 1.1 WHAT IS QUALIT Y OF SERVICE? The overall lecture aims to discuss diverse issues related to quality of service (QoS) in wireless net- works over unlicensed spectrum. However, before we attempt to understand issues of QoS in wire- less networks, it is important to focus on what is understood by quality and the meaning implied by quality in the context of QoS. There are multiple definitions of quality in the economics literature. For example, the British Standards Institution [81] defines quality as “the totality of features and characteristics of a product or service that bear on its ability to satisfy stated or implied needs.” Another source [82] defines quality as “quality refers to the amounts of the un-priced attributes contained within each unit of a priced product.” Most of the definitions incorporate the concept of “characteristics” and consider quality in the context of a particular product. It means quality is referred to in terms of characteristics or attributes associated with a product or service, where things can be measured.
