[When did kindred spirits work together on behalf of their shared devotion to non-coercive education? This chapter examines Duberman’s connections with two kindred spirits, one very well-known and the other less so. John Holt’s best-selling books endeared him to Martin and to Assistant Professor Bill Caspary, a political scientist at Washington University. Holt and Caspary became close before 1970, which is when Martin first met John and Bill, on separate occasions and with different results. Drawing on Caspary’s unpublished autobiography, we see that close bonds among the like-minded were serendipitous and unpredictable.]
