[This chapter articulates the connections between my account of natural kinds and several philosophical doctrines. It is common to use the phrase ‘practical kind’ in opposition to ‘natural kind’, which reflects a common assumption that the real and the practical are in opposition. The first part of the chapter articulates a view which can reconcile the real with the practical, a view which I’ll call pragmatic naturalism (§ A). This talk of reality raises the specter of realism, and the second half of the chapter situates my pragmatic naturalism vis-à-vis the landscape of scientific realism. My view of natural kinds fits with what I’ll call equity realism (§ B).]
