[Traditionally, women at the top of family firms are only daughters who have taken over from their fathers, such as Antonia Ax:son Johnson (Sweden), who successfully runs Axel Johnson AB, one of the largest privately owned businesses in Europe; or they are widows who, when their husbands die, take up the reins of the business, either because they have already been involved a long time or because their children are too young to take over. Ardath Rodale, whose letter follows in this chapter, exemplifies the widow who inherits the family business and becomes a successful family business chairwoman in her own right.
