[This chapter outlines one of the two main theoretical approaches to analyses of ritual: ritual theory. There is extensive literature on ritual in anthropology, religious studies, and sociology; key studies and the principal trends from this research are presented in the first part of the chapter. The second half of the chapter focuses on works which deal with ritual practice in modern social contexts, particularly urban contexts. Case studies from non-Japanese settings are presented. The relevance of existing theories to the case study, which is the subject of this work, is also considered.]
