String Figures as Mathematics?: Comparison of the Trobriander and Guarani-Ñandeva String Figure... [First, this chapter analyzes the elementary operations involved in Trobriander and Guarani-Ñandeva string figure corpora: although the elementary operations are roughly the same the occurrence of certain operations may vary significantly from one corpus to another. Second, it is demonstrated that some sub-procedures were used as the basis for the creation of new string figure procedures and thus allowed the production of genuine systems of transformation. ### Abstract

This viewpoint makes it possible to represent each of these corpora of string figures as a tree diagram, bringing to light their arborescent structure. Finally, this chapter ends by examining phenomena, such as the iterations of sub-procedures, the transformations of one figure into another, the variations on a string figure procedure made possible by altering a single elementary operation, and the existence of several procedures leading to the same final figure, all of which confirm the thesis of a connection between the creation of string figure algorithms and mathematics.]
