[This chapter discusses the genesis of the Armenian massacres in 1915 in the Ottoman Empire. The violent ideology that brought to the Armenian Genocide is here historically analysed departing from the pre-war Armenian question to the First World War deportations. Particular attention will be first put on Ottoman communities vis-à-vis the Millet system, and then devoted to relevant dates (24 April 1915) and sites (Zeitun, Van, Musa Dagh) symbols of massacres and resistance.]
