[In all our ethnographic sites, for Syrian Armenians the Turkish Factor is something real, regardless the fact that the Turkish Army were close to them or not. Interviews and statements pointed to the fact that the involvement of the Turkish Army and Turkish supported factions in the Syrian War are perceived as an attempt from Turkey to remove their community. The perception of the Turkish Factor among Syrian Armenians is not only motivated by contemporary events, it is seen as having direct links to the memory of the Armenian Genocide. This is reproduced in a number of events, between them the April 24 commemoration in Deir ez-Zor or the relocation of Suleyman Shah’s tomb on the old Genocide deportation route. Old transnational links are here reproduced beyond the Armenian communities, involving the wider regional context, starting with the same Turkmen factions and Islamist groups operating within and without the Syrian territory.]
