Syrian Armenians and the Turkish FactorDeir ez-Zor and Its Lieux De Mémoire

Syrian Armenians and the Turkish Factor: Deir ez-Zor and Its Lieux De Mémoire [This chapter is about the way places of commemoration of the Armenian Genocide have become markers for the Syrian Armenian identity and its spatial cultural reproduction. These places carry compelling political meanings related to the communal Armenian ethno-political identity and to transnational dynamics. We will concentrate on the processes which were magnified through spectacular transformations during the Syrian conflict. The narrative will be articulated upon a major Deir ez-Zor commemorative event (April 24th) which has deep roots in the Armenian collective memory. The chapter will explain the way how local Armenians constructed a connection between the symbolic behind the attack and the way Turkish affiliated paramilitary groups, Salafi Jihadi factions and opposition groups then operating in Syria have entered the Armenian political arena. The above allegations reactivated the long-standing question of the Armenian Genocide.] http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png

Abstract

[This chapter is about the way places of commemoration of the Armenian Genocide have become markers for the Syrian Armenian identity and its spatial cultural reproduction. The above allegations reactivated the long-standing question of the Armenian Genocide.]
